Valerie Smith

On Wednesday January 20, 2021, Valerie Cunningham Smith, loving wife, mother, and MiMi, passed away at the age of 85.
Valerie was born on November 18, 1935 to U. Joseph and Vera Cunningham. She grew up in New Orleans and graduated from St Stephen's High School. She met the love of her life Richard Smith as she chased him to play the lead role in a play, where the two would kiss. They married on April 16, 1955 and raised four children. Rick (Molly) Judy (Dan) Chris (Kelly) Steve (Rachel). She cared for her husband of 65 years, children and grandchildren with great love and care. Her greatest passion was her love for Jesus. Her legacy of faith will be passed down to future generations.
Valerie was preceded in death by her father, mother, and brother U. J Cunningham Jr. She is survived by her children, their spouses, her grandchildren Gregory, Courtney, Valerie, Tyler, Simone, Melanie, Joseph, Claire, Sarah Kate, Alexis, Chloe, and Zachary, six great grandchildren, her beloved sister Deanne Authement (Johnny), brother Patrick Cunningham(Linda) sister in laws Betty, Jean, and Louise, and her many nieces and nephews. Mom enjoyed spending her time square dancing with dad and playing tennis with her friends. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Tuesday January 26 at Mary Queen of Peace Church 1501 W Causeway Approach Mandeville, LA 70471. Visitation from 10am until Memorial Mass at 11:00 a.m. Internment to follow at St Joseph's Abby Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff at St Anthony Gardens and Heritage Manor who cared for our mom with love over the last few years.
In lieu of flowers, masses are preferred.
