Sr. Mary Owen (Carolyn) Quintana was born May 22, 1932 in New Orleans, LA. She was a resident of Trinity Trace Community Care Center where she resided since 2021. Sr. Owen is preceded in death by her parents, Marie Louise Kinler Quintana and Ferdinand Frank Quintana as well as her siblings, Owen, Marilyn Q. Rolfes, Norma Q. Gauthreaux, and Thelma Q. Dean. She is survived by her brother Mickey and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Sr. Owen entered the Marianites of Holy Cross on September 7, 1947, at the age of 15 and pronounced her perpetual vows on May 12, 1953. After graduating from the Academy of Holy Angels, she went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Our Lady of Holy Cross College and a Master of Arts in teaching Chemistry from Loyola University, New Orleans. She was also certified as a Medical Technologist.
Sr. Owen taught elementary and high school in various schools in New Orleans and in Plaquemine, LA. She served as a medical technologist at Lake Providence Hospital in Lake Providence, Louisiana, and at the U.S. Public Health Hospital in New Orleans, where she served as education coordinator for medical technologists. She was director of volunteers and special education instructor for the New Orleans Adolescent Hospital in New Orleans, which she claimed was her favorite of all her ministries. After retirement, she volunteered in Mandeville, LA with the Good Samaritan Organization of Our Lady of the Lake Parish. In 2015 Owen moved to Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center in New Orleans, where she was involved in many activities. When she moved to Trinity Trace in Covington, LA in 2021 she became involved there as well – she was the evening Pokeno leader, attended every party, comforted many residents at their deathbed, and lead the staff in prayer every Monday morning before their meeting, to name a few.
Owen was ever the life of the party and was always ready with a song or a story for whomever would listen. IHOP was most often her restaurant of choice – surely there are Belgian Waffles with strawberries and some extra crispy bacon in heaven! – and she was ever-ready to serve Red Roosters for any celebration. Owen’s good nature and generosity flowed from her spirituality and deep knowledge that she was loved by God as was every other creature. She was faithful to the Church and to her prayer life and lived St. Paul’s command to “pray always” especially through music.
Owen’s pride and joy were her many family members and friends. She kept up to date as much as she could from Trinity Trace and was usually ready to park the little red scooter at the front door and hop into the car for whatever the event of the day was.
Owen’s celebration of life will be at St.Benedict Catholic Church in Covington, LA on Wednesday, July 31. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM with the funeral mass at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at the Marianite Mausoleum in Algiers. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Marianites of Holy Cross, 75520 LA 1081, Covington, LA at https://marianites.org/how-you-can-help/donate/ or to the Samaritan Center.
