Shirley Brauwn

Mrs. Shirley Carroll Brauwn was born on February 21,1929 in the heart of Old Mandeville on the corner of Lamarque and Villere Streets, at a time when there were more dirt paths than paved roads. She was happily married to the love of her life, the late Edward A. Brauwn, Sr., and is the mother of Sheila Bennett (Bob), Edward Brauwn, Jr. (Jean), Gregg Brauwn (Toni), and Grant Brauwn (Laurie). She passed away in her sleep on April 13, 2018 at the age of 89, surrounded by loved ones. Preceding her in death is her loving husband Edward, Sr. (1967); her parents William Hardy Carroll and Madge Strain Carroll; her sister, Lillian Lear; and her brothers, Roy, Howard, and Preston Carroll. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren (Shannon Bennett, Amanda Bennett, Jade Brauwn, Joel Brauwn, Ashley Brister, Chelsea Brauwn, Braeden Brauwn, and Joshua Brauwn), three great-grandchildren (August Brauwn, Greyson Brauwn, and Emerson Brister), and many nieces and nephews. Shirley was in the Mandeville High School graduating class of 1945, and married Edward A. Brauwn, Sr. when he returned from serving in the Navy during WWII. They raised their family on Girod Street near the lakefront. Shirley loved to share her stories and memories of Old Mandeville, of cows grazing on the lakefront, helping her mother provide meals for traveling hobos by the railroad tracks, Native Americans selling wares by the harbor, and growing up at Red Gate Farm by Reno Hill. In her early years, she was active in the Mandeville Boating Association, Our Lady of the Lake Women’s Auxiliary, taught classes on dog care for the OLL 4-H Club, and had been deputized as an Auxiliary Mandeville Police Officer. Above all, her greatest love was for her family. Shirley will be remembered for her smile, her kindness, and for her love of the great city of Mandeville.
