Salvador (Sal) Joseph DeBattista, 96, of Covington, LA, died peacefully on April 24, 2024.
He was born in Algiers, LA, after his parents emigrated from southern Italy. Sal grew up with his
six siblings working on the family farm until he worked full-time on the Southern Pacific Railroad
and served as a sergeant in the National Guard. In 1963, he opened DeBattista Nursery in
Algiers. The gardening and landscaping center was a one-stop shop for locals, and nearly
everyone who frequented it had a “Mr. Sal” story. To know him was to love him.
Sal loved working in his vegetable garden, hunting, and fishing in his spare time. But nothing
made him happier than spending time with his beloved wife of 68 years and watching his son’s
family grow. Sal leaves behind two granddaughters and two great-grandsons whom he adored.
Sal was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Guissippi DeBattista, mother Angelina
Mancuso DeBattista, wife Grace DeSalvo DeBattista, and daughter Mary Jane DeBattista. He is
survived by son Nicholas Joseph DeBattista (Brenda Graham), granddaughters Allison
DeBattista (William Martin) and Laura DeBattista Miles (Donald), and great-grandsons Graham
and Wittmann Miles.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Forest Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Your dedicated care and support for Sal during his time with you are deeply appreciated.
