Richard John Lichtenfelt, 77, passed away at home in Covington, Louisiana on November 20, 2020. The son of Wendell H. and Lila L. Lichtenfelt, Richard was born at his maternal grandparents’ home in Pangburn, Arkansas on March 8, 1943. The oldest of five children, Richard spent all but the first two and a half years of his childhood in Armada, Michigan. Besides excelling in football and basketball in high school, Richard also enjoyed playing piano, trumpet, and the bass viol. After serving in the USAF, Richard worked a variety of jobs in the first decade following his time in the military. He worked as a troubleshooter on oil rigs off the coast of western Africa and in the Gulf of Mexico. He later worked as a locksmith in New Orleans before spending most of his working years in the construction industry.
Richard was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Hubert of Wichita, Kansas, and Mary Lichtenfelt of Hemlock, Michigan, his brothers, Steve Lichtenfelt of Armada Michigan, and Fred Lichtenfelt of Wichita, Kansas, and by many nieces and nephews. Richard’s life was enriched by long-time, generous, and loyal friends in the Covington and greater New Orleans areas. During his retirement years, Richard found great pleasure in fishing with his buddies, in cooking, in listening to music, in bird-watching, in gardening, in painting, and especially, in reading.
Cremation has been completed by Bagnell and Son Funeral Home in Covington. A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a later time.
