Richard Calkins

Richard W. Calkins, 74, of Pearl River, LA left this earth to enter into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, January 31, 2019.  He was born April 23, 1944 in New Orleans, LA to Joseph Gay Calkins and Dolores Calkins who preceded him in death as well as a sister Cheryl Calkins.   He was blessed in his life with having a sister Kathy Calkins Berault (Warren), and brothers Dennis Calkins (Mary) and Father Ronnie Calkins.  He was a 1962 graduate of De La Salle and a 1968 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University. Richard’s joy was his family. Richard married the love of his life, June Bigner in June 1977 and with his guidance and love they raised three children, Michael Ballard (Tanya); Mark Calkins (Donald Weaver); and Donna Breland (Kyle).  In addition, he is survived by grandchildren, Michael Ballard (Taylor), Marty Ballard (Alyson) and Tasha Barham (Pete), Kathryn and Meagan Weaver as well as great grandchildren Maci Daley, Peyton Barham, Presley, Hayes and Sawyer Ballard as well as Nolan Ballard.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, Richard’s greatest privilege in life was serving our Lord.  He was called to become a deacon and was ordained in December 1999.  He served at St. Margaret Mary, St John of the Cross, and St. Peter and Paul churches.  Many lives have been touched through his ministry. There will be a visitation on Sunday February 3, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church 66192 St. Mary Drive, Pearl River, LA.  The mass will be held at the same location on Monday, February 4, 2019 at noon with viewing available from 9:00 AM till Noon. In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to be made to St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
