Nicholas Joseph Werther, Jr. died peacefully in the Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at the age of 91. Nick was born in New Orleans, LA on December 3, 1923. He grew up in the Irish Channel, attended St. Alphonsus School and graduated from Redemptorist High School. He was an Army Veteran who served his country during WWII. Nick was a Corporal in the Army Air Corps/Air Force from June 1943 to March 1946 as a P-51 mechanic and administrative clerk. He was with the 3rd Air Force at Drew Field, Tampa, FL, trained in Lincoln, NE at Englewood, and took a ship across the Pacific where he joined the 5th Air Force in the Philippines, then Okinawa, Tokyo and Yohohama/Negishi on Honshu for the Occupation of Japan.
Nick was employed by New Orleans Public Service Inc., as a bus and streetcar driver, worked the power division of Louisiana Power and Light, and retired as a boiler room operator for Entergy, Inc.
Nicholas was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Frances Drea Werther, and his parents, Nicholas Joseph Werther, Sr. and Sara Milhaus Werther. He is survived by his children, Dolores Veinot, Patricia Riley (Chip), Jodi Wade, (Richard), and Jennifer Werther. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Brenda Waters (Mark), James H. McCarthy III, Jeffrey McCarthy (Misty), Olivia, Caroline, and Claire Wade; great grandchildren, Dylan, Durand, Grace, and Luke Waters, and Blake and Riley McCarthy. The family of Nicholas Werther wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home, Hospice in His Care, and Lacombe Nursing Center for his care.
A private memorial is being held for family and close friends at a later date.
