MARY SUSAN “SUSIE” LABADOT NEWMAN passed peacefully into eternal life, embraced by family and friends on August 9. 2024.
She is survived by her husband, Robert “Bobby” Newman and her brother, Jerry Labadot (Mitzi). She was predeceased by her mother and father, Mary Olga Savarese Labadot and Bernard L. “Benny” Labadot, and her brother, B.J. Labadot.
Susie was born in New Orleans and grew up in Lakeview where she attended St. Dominic School and Mount Carmel Academy. She was quick-witted, funny, smart, and a natural leader. She made friends easily and cherished those friendships through the years. After graduation, Susie attended the University of New Orleans while working nights in the credit office of Maison Blanche Gentilly Woods and Lake Forest. She learned how to handle money, manage lending, and accommodate customers. With these qualities, she moved on to become a full time teller at Whitney National Bank. Eventually Susie moved to Covington as the manager of Whitney’s Covington branch. She was well liked and trusted by her employees as well as customers because she treated everyone with respect in all instances. After more than 40 years, Susie retired as an Assistant Vice-President and Manager for Hancock Whitney.
Susie had a big heart and worked earnestly to improve her community. She was a member of the Covington Kiwanis and a Board member of Fire District 12. She supported numerous charitable organizations, and served on the Board of St. Francis Animal Sanctuary, raising thousands of dollars by organizing a huge garage sale that covered the entire parking lot of her bank branches.
Over the years, Susie’s abiding faith in God saw her through hardship and illness. As her faith grew stronger, her natural instinct to help others grew, too. In addition to supporting various charities, Susie ministered to the sick, collected clothes for the needy, assisted hurricane victims, and organized bingos and holiday events at nursing homes. An avid dog lover, she found new homes for rescue dogs and always stopped for strays. She enlisted all her friends to help in these endeavors and she was always there to help her friends.
When Bobby came into her life 16 years ago, Susie knew he was her perfect match. Together they created a new world of possibilities with blended families, friends, and interests, opening their hearts to all. Together they cared for and spoiled their beloved dogs. They loved having the children and grandchildren visit, and enjoyed having friends over to play dominos, cards, or just to visit. And, yes, there was always good food involved. As a former longtime Saints season ticket holder, televised Saints games were mandatory. They also enjoyed retreating to their mountain side cabin in Tennessee where they could spend hours enjoying the peaceful view or visiting with their new neighbors.
Faithful members of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Susie and Bobby attended 8:45 AM Mass every day where they made many dear friends, both lay and clergy. It was their shared deep faith in God that helped them both through this final struggle and find peace in His mercy and love.
