Marcel Joseph “Joey” Nunez, Jr., 67, of Slidell passed away peacefully in his home on August 16, 2021, after a courageous 2- year battle with cancer. Joey was born in Slidell, Louisiana to Marcel Joseph Nunez, Sr and Louise Pichon Nunez. He was a graduate of Salmen High School, Class of 1972. In his early career, he traveled the country as a Seismographer, during which time he met his wife, Julie Talcott of Broadus, Montana. They married in 1982. After the birth of their two children, Brandi and Tyler, they settled back in Slidell in the early 90’s. Joey then began work in the Off-Track Betting and Video Poker Gaming Industry. He loved to spend his free time hunting, fishing and coaching youth baseball, football, and basketball. According to his players, “Coach Joey” was the “best coach”, always positive, uplifting and encouraging. Even after his coaching days, he treasured spending time talking sports and throwing the ball with his great-nephews, Cole, Bryce and Layton, whom he affectionately referred to as his “grandchildren”. He shared his love for all things sports, especially LSU and Saints football, with them and everyone.
Nearly everyone who ever met Joey, became his friend for life. Prior to retirement, he worked as the shuttle driver at Toyota of Slidell, the perfect job where he could make new friends every day. Joey’s jovial spirit and love for life were contagious.
Family-life was the one thing that Joey treasured most. Being part of a large, extended family was the center of Joey’s life. At Joey’s request, numerous friends and family members gathered in his honor prior to his passing. He was witness, via FaceTime, to an amazing and joyful reunion that was of his own doing. He wanted a celebration of life, as opposed to a funeral. “No tears!”, he said. The love in the room was tremendous. He was able to see, in one room, how many lives he had touched.
Joey is preceded in death by his parents: Marcel J. Nunez, Sr. and Louise Pichon Nunez, his sister and brother-in- law: Sheila Nunez Lacour and Ray Lacour, Jr., brother-in – law: David Miller, and brother-in-law: John Duke.
