Leroy Lamar McMillin Jr.

May 8, 1941 — September 27, 2024

Covington, Louisiana

Leroy was born on May 8th, 1941 in Harrisonburg, Louisiana to Leroy and Dot McMillin. He passed away peacefully in his home that he named Maison des Poulets, on September 27, 2024, at the age of 83 , in Covington, LA, with his beloved wife, Judy, by his side.

He loved to tell people, in jest, that he won her in a poker game in New Orleans. When he would run into people throughout the years they would ask him “how’s your poker winnings”?

The truth was, he was an Operations Manager for Armored Car, Inc in the Shreveport, Louisiana office and would travel to the corporate office in New Orleans. One day he stuck his head over the glass pane where Judy was working and said “glad you got to see me”. That was it – true love began and lasted for 50 years until his death.

He was called by many names throughout his life. He started out being called Junior. When he joined the service, both Army and Navy, he was known as Zereaux. Later in life he became a member of a group that loved to cook on the Big Green Egg and called themselves Eggheads. These were the happiest years of his life when he was known as Spring Chicken. He created very unusual dishes and described them with cooking stories that would make you feel as if you could taste them.

He loved to tell stories of the “old days” and was a master at writing. He is what one would call a “page turner” writer. You can’t stop until The End. One of his proudest moments is when he received a note from Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander series. She complimented him on his writing style which thrilled him beyond measure.

Besides writing, he was a woodworker. His greatest gift was being able to take a piece of wood and without a pattern, create a thing of beauty. Over the years he made countless Cathedral birdhouses that he would give as gifts to friends and family. In the last 7 years, while living in the community of Terra Mariae, he would make a special cathedral for the Christmas luncheon. The winner was always so happy to receive one of his birdhouses.

The one common denominator throughout his life was the fact that he was a unique individual loved by many. He was kind, loving, with a great sense of humor and loved to have fun. He made the world a better place and will be remembered fondly by many.

Leroy leaves behind his loving wife Judy (Conrad), siblings: Charles McMillin, and Billy Joe McMillin. Leroy is preceded in death by his parents Leroy and Dorothy (Sargent) and his sister Tommie Oxley.

He asked to be cremated with no services or memorials. His philosophy was love me while I am alive, and think of me after I am gone.
