Leroy Henry Markway passed on to eternal rest on Sunday, June 29, 2014 in Slidell, Louisiana after a protracted illness. Born on July 5th, 1924 in Jefferson City Missouri, he was just shy of his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben S. Markway and Genevieve Eveler Markway; brother, Robert Charles and sister, Genevieve Katherine. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marjorie Volz Markway; his sister, Rosemary Markway Kelpe; children (Robert Charles Markway, James Kenneth Markway, Richard Lee Markway, Susan Markway Rotolo, Ann Markway Cowen and Mary Markway Turnham), 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Lee was a Captain in the Army, serving in Italy during World War II leading a unit composed of Japanese American soldiers, one of the very few at that time. Returning home after the war, he received a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from the Missouri School of Mines at Rolla. He then joined Shell Oil Company at their Woodriver, IL refinery. It was there that he met and married his wife of 65 years on October 1, 1949. His Shell career spanned over 40 years at locations in Illinois, Texas, The Netherlands, New York and Louisiana. He was a lifelong outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and loved nothing better than sharing these skills with his children and grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 910 Cross Gates Blvd, Slidell, LA at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 5th, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be at a later date. A reception will immediately follow at Sue and Kerry Rotolo's home.
