Laura Marshall

Laura Lee Marshall, 88, of Abita Springs, LA crossed over to be with her Lord, family and friends on Thursday, June 4, 2020 after a short illness. Born August 13, 1931, she grew up in Green, TX and was the daughter of the late Leonard H., Sr. and F. Cornelia Marshall of Corpus Christi, TX.   Ms. Marshall began working at an early age of 13, selling tickets at a theater and, after she left there for the night, as dispatcher for a cab company.  She graduated from Bay City High School where she used her love of photography as the school photographer writing for the school paper.  She was a wonderful mother and homemaker, working a brief time with South Central Bell as a telephone operator, only to say her place was at home.  In years past, her hobbies were spending hours in her yard gardening, bowling with friends at Tiffany Lanes in Mandeville and Hammond, LA for many years, and working cross-word puzzles, and last, but not least, FISHING!  What a fisher(wo)man she was!!!   She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Newberry Laws, and her husband, Joseph R. Laws of Mandeville, LA and her son, Robert C. Newberry, Sr. of Folsom, LA.  She also is survived by two grandchildren, Robert C. Newberry, Jr. of Abita Springs, LA and Serena M. Moore of Metairie, LA; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her children’s father, Joseph Robert Newberry and Buford Virgil Dyess, her second husband. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, L.H. Marshall, Jr. and E.W. Marshall and two sisters, Nadine Payne and Carrie Jo Gibson, all from Texas; one grandson, Scott R. Holloway from Florida.  Many thanks and much love goes out to Kathy Wisner, her caregiver, and Melissa Dunlavy, Robert Sr.’s fiancé, for the special care and love given to Ms. Marshall the last four months; also, heartfelt thanks to Gwen Newberry for being a special friend to her.  Because it was the wishes of Ms. Marshall not to have a service or memorial, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in her memory to St. Tammany Health System Women's Pavilion where she worked as a volunteer, in the wig center, until she herself was diagnosed with….breast cancer in 2006.
