Joseph “Joe” Victor Mathies Sr. passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2019 in Folsom, LA. He was born on March 6, 1935 in Covington, LA to late William Arthur Mathies Sr. and Lottie Mathies. Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Patricia “Pat” Mathies. He was the loving father of Donald A. Mathies (Patty), Karen M. Kety (Temo), Barbara Mathies, Betty Mathies, and the late Joseph V. Mathies, Jr (Belinda). Joe was the proud grandfather of Daniel Mathies (Colleen), Marc Mathies, and Ryan Mathies; Cyrus Kety, Marcus Kety, and Jonas Kety; Lisa M. Hernandez (David) and April M. Szalajeski (Dana). He was the great-grandfather of Illyana Hernandez, Olivia Hernandez, and Aeryn Hernandez. Joe was the brother of Frances Mathies Ruggiero, Lionel Mathies, and the late William Mathies Jr. He will also be dearly missed by numerous foster children and foster grandchildren. Joe worked in the St. Tammany Parish School System for 11 years where he ended his career as the head custodian at Abita Springs Middle School. Before that he was employed by Prestressed Concrete where he helped create platforms in the building of the Causeway Bridge. Joe also served in Unites States Army Reserves. The family of Joseph Mathies would like to thank Community Care Hospice for the compassionate care they provided him. Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Mass at St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church, 72040 Maple St., Abita Spring, LA 70420 on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 12:00 Noon with visitation from 10:00 AM until Mass time. Interment will follow the service at Abita Springs City Cemetery, Abita Springs, LA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Care Hospice, (985) 340-1880.
