Joseph Rene’ Martin passed away Sunday, February 1, 2015 at The Sanctuary at Passages Hospice in New Orleans at the age of 94. Beloved husband of the late Falicie (Fay) Viosca Martin and loving father of Daniel James Martin and the late John Robert Martin. Father-in-law of Karen Carbon Martin. Son of the late Rene’ Joseph Martin and Eugenie Webre Martin. Brother of the late Frances Martin. “Pops” is survived and fondly remembered by his three grandchildren, Colin Daniel Martin, Brian David Martin, and Erin Leigh Martin and by two nieces.
A native of the Lakeview area in New Orleans, Louisiana for many years, he later relocated and retired to Mandeville, Louisiana where he resided for the past 30 years.
Joe began his career working for the Kirschman’s Furniture Corp. as a furniture adjuster and retired after 40 years of service. He was a master cabinet maker and craftsman and learned his trade from Delgado Trade School. Joe or “Jazzman Joe” was also an accomplished Dixieland Jazz Harmonica player and was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica (SPAH). Over his many years, Joe played with several noted New Orleans musical greats and on May 17th, 2005, played as a featured guest musician with the Allman Brothers Band at the Saenger Theater, New Orleans.
A private celebration of Joe’s life will be held in the future. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:
