It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Daniel Jarrell Sr., age 82, on April 14, 2025. Born on October 14, 1942, to Irvin and Ruby Jarrell, Joe dedicated his life to serving others, leaving a legacy of compassion and commitment.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Ruby, and his brothers Jerry and Donald. He is survived by his children Joe Jarrell, Jr. (April), Melissa McIntosh, and Linda Burnette (Jimmy), his sisters Lorraine Mendow and Sharon “Peaches” Brown, and the many loving men of St. Joseph’s Abbey.
He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to eleven great-grandchildren.
His dedication to service began after he graduated from high school when he joined the Louisiana Army National Guard. In 1967, he received his first law enforcement commission with the City of Covington. He went on to be elected Police Chief of Sun, LA, before starting a distinguished 33-year career at the St. Tammany Sheriff's Department. Throughout his time in law enforcement, he earned numerous commendations for his bravery and exemplary service.
As a devoted Christian and parishioner of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Joe lived out his faith through acts of service. Following his retirement from law enforcement, he began a fulfilling career at St. Joseph’s Abbey, where he dedicated 23 years to a variety of roles, including woodworking, beekeeping, grounds maintenance, and caring for the many animals on the property. His work at the Abbey truly reflected his spirit of service and unwavering dedication.
Joe’s unwavering faith and commitment to his community will be remembered by all who knew him. He touched the lives of many and inspired countless others to serve with love and integrity.
Services for Joseph Daniel Jarrell Sr. will be held at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 20370 Smith Road, Covington, LA. A visitation will be held from 9:30 AM, with a Mass to follow at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Abbey Cemetery, 75376 River Rd.., St Benedict, LA 70457, following the Mass.
