Dr. Jacquelyn Pittman, RN, EdD passed away Friday, January 19 th , 2024. Dr. Pittman was born and raised in Pensacola, Florida and graduated from Pensacola High School. She graduated from Sacred Heart Hospital of Pensacola School of Nursing in 1953. After receiving her nursing degree, Dr. Pittman served as a Sister with the Daughters of Charity for 5 years. Dr. Pittman received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education from Florida State University in 1958. In 1959 she received her Master of Arts in Nursing Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 1968, she went on to graduate from Teacher’s College Columbia University where she received her Doctorate of Education.
Dr. Pittman was a professor at Louisiana State University from 1980 until her retirement in 2000. During her tenure, she served as the Chair of the Curriculum Committee for the Doctorate of Nursing Program. Previously, Dr. Pittman was a tenured professor at the University of Texas at Austin. During her time at UT Austin, she served as the Chair of the Curriculum Committee for the Doctorate of Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing programs. Dr. Pittman served as the Chair of the Department of Nursing and was instrumental in the design of the first Associate Nursing Program for Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Florida. During Dr. Pittman’s educational career, she received numerous awards and accolades for her research and dedication to the nursing profession. She was a member of numerous professional organizations including The American Academy of Political and Social Science, National League of Nursing, Texas Association of College Teachers, American Association of University Professors and American Historical Society for Nurses (Sigma Sigma Phi).
Dr. Pittman was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Hettie Wilson Pittman, brother Edward and sister, Gloria. She was also preceded in death by her long-time companion Barbara Hopson. Dr. Pittman is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by beloved and cherished friends.
A private mass will be held at a future date to be determined.
