Janice Henderson Doran, 73, passed away peacefully and comforted by her family at her home on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, after her courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer. The awe-inspiring embrace of love and support she received from family and friends throughout her journey until the moment our Lord called her home was such an incredible blessing and beautiful tribute to her life.
Janice was born March 6, 1947, raised in Violet, La., and was a 1965 graduate of St. Bernard High School. She was the devoted and loving wife of John Owen Doran Jr. from 1965 until his unexpected death in 1996. Together they raised their children in Meraux, La.
She is preceded in death by her husband John Owen Doran Jr. (1996), parents Ashley (1995) and Kathleen Cantrell Henderson (2008).
Proud mother and grandmother, she is survived by her children, John O. Doran III (Karen) and Ashley Doran Powell (Clyde).
Grandchildren: Lauren Powell Moore (Jonathan), Natalie Powell Felger (Cory), Brent Powell, Jake Doran, Nichole Nunez (Erroll), and Seth Doran. Great grandchildren: Savannah, Hadley, Hank, Layne and Liam.
Siblings: Ashlie Rodriguez (Roddy) and the late Reed Henderson (Hope).
Sister-in-law Kathleen Doran and brother-in-law Tom Doran (Betty).
Beloved Aunt to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s her career included working for the St. Bernard Parish school system, St. Bernard Parish banks and Chalmette General Hospital. In 1984, she began her tenure with the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office serving under former Sheriff Jack A. Stephens (retired) and current Sheriff, James Pohlmann as the administrative assistant to Chief Deputy Richard Baumy. Her devotion and dedication to the Sheriff’s office and her love for politics was undeniable during her 36-year career. The incredible and lifelong friendships she formed were near and dear to her heart.
We will forever carry with us her strength, her generous and giving heart, her quick-witted sense of humor, her unending funny sayings, and her loyal and unwavering nature. She had the ability to make those she loved feel like they were the most special person on earth.
To say that she will be missed doesn’t even begin to describe the void that will be forever felt by those loved by her and those who truly knew and loved her.
Janice’s family is very appreciative of the loving care provided by Dr. Kelvin Contreary and Dr. Robert Veith during her illness.
