Jane Gray Hyman Spraul peacefully passed away at her daughter’s house surrounded by her family March 23, 2021, at 90 years old. She was the daughter of the late, great jazz artist/instructor Johnny “Wiggs” Hyman and Dolores “Betty” Hyman, an accomplished poetess. Jane and her sister, Marsha Hyman, later Monroe, were raised in Metairie and she attended school at Sophie Wright. Her beloved maternal grandmother, Margaret Dolores Mithoff, impressed upon her the family’s history through memberships in the DAR and Magna Charta societies. She loved horseback riding on the levee with her college friends. She enjoyed art and drawing and won several awards. A graduate of Loyola University, she obtained a degree and began teaching grammar school. Married to the late Gary L. Spraul, she withdrew from teaching and moved with her three children to various cities including Tulsa, Houston, Corpus Christi, Metairie, and New Orleans. While at Cabrini Parish, she and Gary joined Mary’s Helpers. The couple eventually settled on the Northshore and was active in the Greenleaves Neighborhood Association for a number of years. They attended Mary Queen of Peace parish and lived there until they both passed away. They are survived by their three children: Janet, Randy, and David, and two grandchildren: Charles and Piper. A Mass for Christian burial will be held at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 W. Causeway Approach in Mandeville, LA on Monday, March 29, 11:00 AM. Visitation is from 10:00 AM until service time.
Attendants are asked to please wear a mask.
