Fernando Gonzales Alvarez, 62 years old peacefully passed away after a valiant battle of colorectal  cancer at Oschner Main Campus, on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, in New Orleans. He was born August 17, 1958 in Puerto Rico, but he lived most of his life in New Orleans. He was the son of Pacita Gonzales and Rafael Gonzales. He was the brother to three sisters and two brothers.Fernando was married to Joni Marie Alvarez.

He went on to join the army and after, then went on to peruse his other passion, landscaping and gardening. He was a jack of all trades. He had several long time customers and took tremendous pride in his beautiful work. Although landscaping and gardening was a business, it was also a hobby for him as well. Gardening was therapeutic for him and when he was not in the garden, his hobbies consisted of spending time with his grandchildren, family, pets, and friends. Fernando was also an animal lover and had 4 dogs and a pet cocktail.  Fernando faithfully attended church, and read the Bible almost daily.

Fernando was the father to his two beautiful daughters, Jennifer Jane Alvarez, and Nadia Cherie (Alvarez) Hill, and father in law to Brian Hill.  He was the grandfather “PawPaw” to a  total of 9 grandchildren, Jasmine Marie Smith, Joshua Roy Smith, Noah Evan Borries, Gabriella Kristen Laborde, Carson Jude Hill, Amber Nicole Hill, Carolyn Mariah Hill, Ariel Jane Alvarez, and Jasriel Camille Alvarez, and a great-grandfather “PawPaw” to David John Marino III and Luna Marie Marino.

Fernando’s legacy will live on in all the hearts and minds he interacted with as well as those he reached but never met. Share your stories of remembrance on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Saint Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church in River Ridge at 11AM.
