Capt. Erle Joseph Hawxhurst , born April 17, 1936 in New Orleans, La, devoted Catholic and lover of Jesus Christ, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus November 1, 2023 (All Saints Day). Son of the late Erle Hawxhurst and Amelie Miltenberger of New Orleans.
Last surviving beloved brother of the late Sr. Mary Amelie Hawxhurst, Elise Hawxhurst Santoro, John Hawxhurst, Peter Hawxhurst, and Sr. Adele Hawxhurst.
Erle resided in Mandeville and is survived by his wife Althea Voltz Hawxhurst and step children Ronald Porche (Deborah) and Wendy Porche. Also survived by his 1 st wife Saja McCarthy (divorced) and children: Holly Hawxhurst DeBautte (Keith), Oren Hawxhurst (Sally), Chris Hawxhurst (Windy), Thomas Hawxhurst, Daniel Hawxhurst, Timothy Hawxhurst (Tanea Martinez fiancee), grandchildren, step -grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Served 3 years in the Marine Corps and as a Merchant Marine. Worked many jobs including Crescent Towing and Salvage Company Inc., (T. Smith and Son). Worked his way up from deckhand to Captain. Was Captain of the tugboat Sally R for 15 years at Bisso and Son Inc. Then worked at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a Lock and Dams Operator.
Erle loved to be surrounded by his family and friends and always called to check on them even in his last surviving days. An always strong determined man who always gave a helping hand. You will be missed. Rest now in peace.
Service will be held Thursday November 9, 2023 at St. Joseph Abbey; 75376 River Road; Saint Benedict, La 70457. Erle’s nephew Fr. Thomas Hawxhurst of Houston, Texas will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Mass will be at 2 p.m. followed by burial in St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery.
All relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend.
