Dr. James George May PhD, “Jim”, passed on January 8, 2018 after watching the New Orleans Saints beat the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Wildcard play-off game with his loving daughters. He leaves his daughter, Monique May Casey; his daughter Zoё May Smith and her husband Michael A. Smith; his sister, Juliet Jackson and her husband Charles Jackson; his family Veneta and John Oster; and grandchildren, Camille and William Smith. Jim was born in Chicago on October 3, 1940 then raised in New Orleans, attended De La Salle High School, and served in the United States Air Force for four years in the United Kingdom. He went on to earn his PhD in Psychology from the University of Houston. He had an accomplished career in the research of visual perception, neuroscience and motion sickness. He was a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of New Orleans for over 35 years. His experience includes various positions of visiting Professor of Psychology/Clinical Professor at the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales, the University of Tasmania, Louisiana State University Medical School and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Jim authored over 230 publications and posters and received over 30 research grants. He received many academic awards including an LSU Distinguished Faculty Fellowship Award, Fulbright Scholar Research Fellowship, Fogarty Scholarship and Endowed Villere Chair for Research in Neuroscience. As he traveled the world to collaborate with esteemed colleagues in the field, he also mentored many post-doctoral and graduate students. He had a wicked sense of humor and enjoyed introducing visiting professors, colleagues and students to Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest and local cuisine. As a life-long basset hound lover, he enjoyed raising basset and blood hounds and miniature donkeys on his farm, Genesee Acres, in Covington after retirement. He was an avid golfer and achieved the feat of getting a hole-in-one. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Services on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Bagnell & Son Funeral Home, 75212 Lee Rd., Covington, LA 70435.
