Dorothy Parker Holmes, Dot, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the age of 87.
Dot’s beloved husband, Bob, passed away almost 6 years before on January 5, 2019. Dot was born January 7, 1937, in Sunflower, MS, the oldest of 4 children to A. Rex Parker and Essie Mae Cannon Parker and was raised in Brooksville, MS. Her siblings, J. Rex Parker, Lynn Parker Black and Bill Parker preceded her in death.
She attended what was then known as Mississippi State College for Women (MSCW) in Columbus, MS. On February 1, 1959, she married Bob Holmes of Brooksville, MS. Bob’s banking career took them to various towns throughout Mississippi (Gulfport, Yazoo City, Brandon) and Florida (Gainesville and Hawthorne). Bob and Dot put down roots everywhere they lived, became involved in their community and church, and made lifelong friends. They knew how to have fun and enjoyed life together. Dot was a wife and stay at home mother for most of her life. During this time, Dot was very active in community organizations including the Junior League of Jackson. Once they moved to Gainesville in 1987, she began working for Capstone Properties, a job which allowed her to travel across the country assessing and supporting new university apartment housing.
Throughout their married life, Bob and Dot enjoyed traveling, spending time with their children, grandchildren, and a large group of family and friends. Upon retirement, they relocated to Fairhope, AL, a favorite destination throughout their married life. Dot was a member of First Baptist Church of Fairhope where she was very involved with her Sunday School class. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Dot is survived by their children: Kimberly Kent (Steve) of Mandeville, LA; David Holmes of St. Augustine, FL; and William Parker of Starkville, MS; and 4 grandchildren: Cannon Ray Kent (Kelsey) of Raleigh, NC; Jane Elizabeth Kent of Atlanta, GA; Lucy Esther Kent of Mandeville, LA; and Robert Parker Holmes, US Coast Guard, of Marquette, MI.
All are invited to join Dot’s family at a gathering of family and friends on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 9:30 am until the service time of 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Fairhope, 300 Section St., Fairhope, AL 36532.
