Daniel Snow Jr

March 13, 1936 — February 7, 2018

Daniel G. Snow Jr., 81, a former musician and resident of Lihue Gardens in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii, passed away on February 7, 2018 at the Pontchartrain Health Center in Mandeville, La.  Danny was born on March 13, 1936 in New Orleans. He is survived by his son Brian Murray of Modesto, CA; sister Carman Snow of Hammond, La.; and brothers Ronald D Snow of Mandeville, Sidney J. Snow of New Orleans, and C. Edward Snow of Arlington Heights, IL.  At age 7, Danny moved to San Francisco with his mother and brother Ed. He attended grade school and middle school in San Francisco, and graduated from Campbell Union High School in Campbell, CA, in 1954. His musical talents were apparent early on.  He started with piano at an early age and learned to play the tuba at Presidio Junior High School.   In high school he switched to drums because he found carrying a tuba in the marching band was too taxing.   After high school Danny formed his own dance band and went on to independently study voice, trumpet and other musical instruments. He performed with some of the nation’s big bands and for several years was lead vocalist and drummer - and played both trumpet and trombone - with the Brass Doubles, a versatile musical group that co-featured partner Dave Green on piano, trumpet and flugel horn. The musical pair literally doubled in brass while providing a complete rhythm section.  Their repertoire combined old tunes with new in a range of modalities.  They were comfortable playing everything from Dixieland to Country and from Pop Tunes to Bach.  For several years the Brass Doubles were fixtures at clubs in Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe and the San Francisco Bay Area but also performed at other venues in the U.S. and Canada and as far away as South Africa.   Danny moved to Kauai as a sales representative for Ventures Associates, a paper products distributor, in 1980. Following retirement, he worked as a licensed tour guide for Island visitors from the mainland and Europe.  Interment was recently held at Eternal Rest Cemetery.
