Charles Frederick Schroeder III, affectionately known as Fred, was born on February 26, 1949, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and he left this world on November 3, 2024, leaving behind a vibrant tapestry of memories woven through a life richly lived. A devoted husband, steadfast father, affectionate grandfather, and loyal friend, Fred’s journey was marked by a zeal for adventure and a profound connection to family, nature, and the spirit of Louisiana.
Fred graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie’s class of 1967, while he was in high school he was the President of the DXL fraternity and further pursued his education at institutions including LSU, Southeastern, UNO, and Tulane. These academic pursuits laid the groundwork for a successful career, in which he excelled as Vice President of Intertrans Corporation and served as the President of the New Orleans Air Cargo Association. His accomplishments extended beyond the office, as he cherished his role as an active member and Chairman of the board for many years of the Ducks Unlimited Covington and Mandeville Chapter, reflecting his deep love for the outdoors and commitment to conservation.
A true Louisiana sportsman at heart, Fred reveled in the rugged beauty of the bayous, dedicating his time to duck hunting and fishing in the state he loved so dearly. His adventurous spirit led him to over 60 countries, where he embraced the wonder of travel, both for business and pleasure. From the exciting early days of local hunting to thrilling big game safaris across Africa and New Zealand, his tales of adventure echoed through countless gatherings at his cherished "Fred's Animal House." There, he hosted family and friends, sharing laughter over Bourré games, delicious meals, and the warmth of togetherness.
Fred's enthusiasm for life didn’t end on land. He found joy surfing the coastal waves, balancing effortlessly on his prized Hobie Surfboard from Pensacola, Florida, to Grand Isle, Louisiana. A lifelong fan of LSU sports, he could often be found cheering passionately for the football and baseball teams, embodying the spirited culture of his home state. He took particular delight in watching his beloved grandchildren, Bronson May, Austill May, and Frederick Fields, play sports. Fred himself spent many youthful years playing Football and Baseball at Metairie Playground, forging bonds of friendship with those who enriched his life until the very end.
Fred’s nurturing heart extended to his creative pursuits. Later in life, he discovered his penchant for writing and painting, capturing the beauty around him and the intricacies of his experiences in cherished stories and vivid colors. He penned heartfelt poems for family and friends, weaving threads of love and legacy that will continue to echo through the lives he touched.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Molly McHugh Schroeder, daughters Amy Schroeder May (Carlton) and Beth Schroeder Fields (Blaine), as well as his sister Tami M. Schroeder (David). Fred also leaves behind the bright spirits of his grandchildren—Bronson, Austill, and Frederick—who will carry forth his legacy of adventure, passion, and love. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Frederick Schroeder Jr., and his mother, Marilyn Cabell.
