Betty Moran

Betty “Boo” Moran passed away just after midnight June 16th at the age of 93. She was in hospice care at Restoration Senior Living in Covington, LA.

Boo was born in San Antonio, Texas July 4th  1928. She was the youngest child of Lillian (Wood) Moran and Captain William K. Moran. Boo is predeceased by her brother Colonel William (Bill) Moran Jr. and her sister Lillian (Mickey) Anderson.

Boo’s early years were filled with tragedy. She lost her father to suicide when she was a toddler. One year later her mother passed of cancer. As Boo used to say, “she was handed over the fence”. Neighbors ended up taking care of her. Sadly, she was separated from her brother and sister in her early years. Once she reached High School age, Boo went to live with her Aunt Bess and Uncle Grady Burton in Florida. She graduated from Wauchula High School and went on to Charity Nursing School receiving her RN in 1948. She received her CRNA at Ohio State University in 1952. Getting her RN and CRNA was quite a feat, as women in the late 1940s and early 1950s did not often attend college. The challenge of higher education was compounded by having limited financial means due to the loss of her parents.

Boo took the “path less traveled” having realized at an early age she was gay. It was not Boo’s style to talk about her private life, since the subject was taboo. Boo was a woman before her time, a trail blazer. She supported herself and lived life on her own terms.

Boo lived in both Houston and New Orleans where she enjoyed a group of dear friends. These women became her second family and proved to be a wonderful support system throughout her long life.

She led a full and exciting life traveling around the globe. One of her favorite spots was Cancun, Mexico where she would gather with all her dear friends as well as her three nieces, in whom she instilled a love of that beautiful country. As they say in the Big Easy “we passed a good time cher”.

Her friends describe her as being the “most physically beautiful person I have met”. “She loved to dance and was the life of the party”. Boo loved to cook and entertain, often hosting her beloved “Gourmet Club”. She loved to garden and read and dote on her dogs. In the word of a dear friend, “boo was an integral part of our community

On June 20th 2014 Boo legally married her longtime companion Bonnie Langley surrounded by friends and family.

Boo is survived by her wife Bonnie Langley of Covington, LA, nieces, Robin Moran of Durham, NC, Nancy Cooper of Athens, OH, Ellen Moran and her wife Sheila Mahon of Hancock NH, three grand nieces, a total of five great grand nieces and nephews, as well as her group of life-long friends.
