Antonio Alexander Vega (Tony), age 61, of Covington, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with his wife by his side, after a long and courageous journey with early-onset Alzheimer’s.
Tony was born on February 7, 1964, in New York City, the son of George Vega Sr. and the late Natividad Rodriguez Wewetzer (spouse Dean Wewetzer). As the son of a U.S. Army mother, he spent his early life in various parts of the world, including Livorno, Italy, and Panama City, Panama. He participated in Outward Bound and enjoyed hiking, spelunking, archery, and exploring forestry and the outdoors—interests that reflected his deep connection to nature.
Tony also had a passion for theater, performing in Jesus Christ Superstar in Italy, and Chicago and Biloxi Blues in Panama. A natural performer, he was known for his joyful spirit and ability to light up any room.
Tony was proud of his Puerto Rican heritage, and his love for Latin music and dance—especially salsa—reflected that joyfully. He was almost always moving to music, bringing joy to those around him.
He was a gentle, fun-loving man remembered for his warm heart, bright smile, and sense of humor. He loved cooking for the family, storytelling, painting, music, and video gaming—especially World of Warcraft. He also played harmonica and bongo drums, and was a talented graphic designer, artist, and creative writer. A collector of swords and a fan of The Lord of the Rings, he also loved Renaissance fairs and anything Medieval. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Tammany Yacht Club, where he enjoyed sailing and supporting the club’s Wednesday night races. Tony also had a deep faith and found great joy in Bible discussions and prayer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Caroline Vega, and children: David Vega and his wife Madison Vega of Ponchatoula, LA, along with their son Koa Vega; Judah Vega of Covington, LA; Nathan Vega and his wife Eveanne Vega of Grand Junction, CO; and Monique Vega-Hodgson and her husband Matthew Hodgson of London, England, along with their children Mylo and Mia Hodgson. He is also survived by his father, George Vega Sr. of Zephyrhills, FL; his brothers, George Vega Jr. (Karen Vega) of Zephyrhills, FL, and Eric Vega (Jennifer Vega) of Westwood, NJ; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Natividad Rodriguez Wewetzer, and his grandmother, Ramona Aponte.
Tony’s family is especially grateful for the love, prayers, visits, and support shown during his time in hospice. Caroline extends her deepest gratitude to her parents, Miryam and Mark Arieli of Fontana, California; her sister, Robin Rotstein of Covington, Louisiana; her aunt, Irene Friedrichs of Covington, Louisiana; her cousin, Mimi Friedrichs of Covington, Louisiana; and her nephew, Joseph Rotstein—for their unwavering love and care throughout Tony’s illness. Each one offered support in unique and meaningful ways, especially during the most difficult times in his care. Their presence—whether through caregiving, companionship, respite, or simply walking alongside Caroline and Tony—brought immeasurable comfort and strength.
Special thanks also go to Judah, David, and Madison Vega, who stood strong for their dad with love and dignity. They remained by his side through every stage of his illness, walking through an incredibly difficult journey with strength, compassion, and grace. Deep gratitude is also extended to the dedicated hospice nurses and aides whose compassion and care brought dignity and peace to Tony’s final chapter.
